Ice Festival

The dead of the Russian winter is enlivened by a festival in which sculptures are carved out of ice; a competition is held for the best one. Russians have long enjoyed making ice buildings. In 1740 Empress Anna, known for her cruel jokes, ordered an ice palace built on the River Neva for the enforced marriage of her court jester.
